For whom the bell tolls, John Donne

December 14, 2008

No man is an island,
Entire of itself.
Each is a piece of the continent,
A part of the main.
If a clod be washed away by the sea,
Europe is the less.
As well as if a promontory were.
As well as if a manner of thine own
Or of thine friend’s were.
Each man’s death diminishes me,
For I am involved in mankind.
Therefore, send not to know
For whom the bell tolls,
It tolls for thee.

The starfish

December 14, 2008

As a young woman walked down a beach at dawn, she saw an older woman mowing across the sand, bending to pick up a stranded starfish and throw it into the sea.  The older woman repeated the task again and again.

The younger woman asked her why she was wasting her time.  The older woman explained that the stranded starfish would die if left in the morning sun.  “But there must be thousands of miles of beach and millions of starfish.  How can your efforts make any difference?”

The older woman looked down at the small starfish in her hand and said, “It makes a difference to this one”.
